With a name like LocoGopher, its got to be, uh…
LocoGopher.com is a very new Local search engine, so it’s best used just by our California friends for now. For this trial, I put in Nitin Karandikar’s work address and the keyword “coffee.” Hopefully he will leave a comment for us and/or review his favorite java shop.

A few words from LocoGopher: “Our mission is founded on a fairly simple premise: to connect local communities and local businesses in ways that are simple and engaging. We want to provide a place where together we can bridge the gap to provide a local and relevant connection to your local community. We believe that to promote an effective and unbiased source of local content we need to remove that bias: advertising. Our goal is to put the power of the Internet back into your hands. You choose the content you wish to view. Therefore you will never see any type of advertising or sponsored search results, nor will we alter or modify reviews of local businesses by the community. We value the information our community and businesses provide so much that we want to make this communication as easy and informative as possible.”

Cool! Now I know where to go for my daily coffee. Thanks, Charles!
My only complaint is that there is no mention of my favorite coffee chain,Peet’s Coffee!! [Everyone knows that Peet's has better coffee than Starbucks! Yes, it's a Bay Area thing :-)]
Seriously, though, this sounds like a pretty useful service. Having said that, how is LocoGopher different from what you can already get from - wait for it - Google?
