SMX Session Five

Keynote Q & A with Joshua Schachter, founder of del.icio.us & Garrett Camp, co-founder of StumbleUpon (SU).
SU is not a place where you go to search for something, you go there to see what your friends or people of similar interests have found and recommend.
del.icio.us is a place where you go to save information and find it again later. “A social memory platform.” Secondly, you can see what your friends are bookmarking.
del.icio.us has been able to scale up due to their acquisition by Yahoo! Greater resources, etc. They are working on “del.icio.us 2 - or just d2 -due out this year-” without all the years of patches, etc.
SU tries to maintain a degree of individuality, even though owned by ebay. There has been little change. SU will eventually update their home page to allow for more customization/personalization, but right now the SU toolbar is their main focus.
Both companies started in 2001 as personal projects and they worked many long hours for years before things “took off.”
Without being “dating sites,” they are both exploring the expansion from individual usage, to connection with a friend or friends, to relatively serious “work groups.”
As for privacy: 1) Obviously, if you don’t want the whole world to know certain information, then don’t put it out there! 2) If you do let some information about your interests get out, you may discover interesting new friends and valuable information that you never would have come across on your own. It’s a trade off that everyone must decide for themselves.
End of Session Five.
End of Day One (of Two)
Next - the evening reception with Kaila “I could have danced all night” Colbin. Eat you heart out Berkowitz. ![]()
