Google flirting with 90% of market share in France

Henrick Kac from Blogdimension.com recently translated this article for us. It’s a study of Search market share in France, where Google has a 90% share! The study was carried out in August of 2007 on 84,991 French web sites.

The Top 5 : Google has 90% of the French Search market share!

Google gets 89.98% of the visits and the other search engines - Yahoo ! (3.17%), MSN (2.33%), Orange (1.82%) and Free (0.69%). All the others share the remaining 2.01%. In the US, our Top 5 get approx. 98% of total share, with the alternative search engines splitting up the remaining 2%.

In one month (July-Aug) Google gained .19%, from 89.79% to 89.98%. It doesn’t sound like much, but in the past year, between August 2006 and August 2007, Google went up 3.76%.

Its 4 main competitors all lost ground in the 13 last months.

The Top 15 : AOL, Alice, Voilà, Altavista and Ask still rank from numbers 6 to 10 of the Search Engine list in August 2007. This list is supplemented by 9Online, Exalead, Virgilio, Wikio (which enters the top 15 this month) and Lycos.

While Google goes on with its conquest, 7 search enngines within the top 15 scored a relatively good performance in August 2007: Ask, Wikio and 9Online made the most progress that month, respectively +27.1%, +21.6% and +13.4%, +2.5% for Exalead and Voilà, and +1.3% for Alice, and finally, Yahoo!’s fall is stopped this month thanks to a 0.8% increase in visits. 7 search engines are nonetheless in difficult positions, in particular Altavista (-11.2%), Virgilio (-6.7%) and MSN (-5.9%), all loosing market share.

If Google can make it to 89.98% in France, just how high can they go?

Could this ever happen in the US? In any other country? Comments?
