Defrag Day 2 Enterprise 2.0 (Andrew McAfee)

Enterprise 2.0 is the use of social software platforms within companies or between companies and their partner and /or customers.

Wikis / Blogs / RSS / Prediction Markets / Search / Social Software / Links

1) What is the value?  Management wants to know, “what can these new technologies do for us?

b) Help with decisions.  Management also needs help, not making decisions, but deciding which technologies to use?

c) Deployment.  Having chosen a technology, companies need help in deploying them.

So, you’re a Top Techie in Company X.  Circle One is your closest co-workers.  Circle Two, co-workers that you “pass in the hallway.”  Circle Three is made of Potential helpers, people who work in the company, but she just hasn’t met them.  Circle Four (Ah, Dante!) is people we don’t need (want?) to know.

Circle #1 - the closest people, the Wiki is the tool to look at for these benefits: productivity, agility, responsiveness.

Note to self:  If you want bloggers to cover a, b, and c, then have clear slides showing a, b, and c, and leave them up long enough to process.  This speaker is doing this quite well.

Circle #2 - Co-workers with “weak ties.”  Most of our time is spent strengthening the closest ties even more.  That sounds right.  What do I do everyday?  Email Kaila and Nitin.  The strong ties get stronger.

But, and this is an excellent point, it is the other people around us who would have new, different, and fresh ideas.  We need to stop, turn around, and communicate with people that we only know “weakly.”  (And we do try to do that.) Have you ever wanted to share some ideas with CKN? (Charles, Kaila, Nitin) - please do! Just use Charles@ReadWriteWeb.com

Good technology: SNS (Social Networking Software).  Benefits - Non-Redundant information, bridges to other networks.

Circle #3 - Potential helpers.  Good tool, the blogosphere.  I have a blog, Kaila has at least one (VortexDNA blog) and Nitin has one (Software Abstractions), and then there is my “parent” blog, www.ReadWriteWeb.com

Benefits: Serendipidty, innovation, bridging to new networks (people), teams, idea sharing.

Note: Over cofee I met someone from a very large company (I even recognized it) who had not heard of www.MsDewey.com.  How do I talk to people who have not even seen the Alts?  We have no common information to build upon.  This is why AltSearch Engines is important, to show people “the most wonderful search engines they have never seen.”

Circle #4.  The people you don’t need/want to know.  The tool?  A predicition market.  Stock market model.  Benefit: collective intelligence - the Answer - what the Market “is saying” having incorporated every predicition about every aspect of a company from every broker.  Strangely accurate results.  See also “the wisdom of the Crowds.”

Conclusion:

This model of circles (and each smaller circle is inside the larger ones - sorry, no graphic.) can be very helpful for a company.  New technologies can then be logically selected.

Q: Aren’t ’imitation’ predicition markets (”play money”) invalid because people are not using real money?  The speaker feels that the results are actually accurate, nonetheless.
