Google and OpenSocial
They are so many Social Networking sites with their own APIs. OpenSocial creates a commonality. One API, many websites.
Using (private, professional) versus Performing (public - look at me! - social)
Douglas Adams quote (sorry, it’s too long): Who can you trust on the Internet? The Internet is not a lot of “them,” it’s a whole lot of “Us.”
Shoot! At this point the speaker decides to go into the code aspects of OpenSocial. Time to check my email? ;-) Wait, the moderator just said “skip the code stuff.” Thanks, moderator!
OpenSocial at Google grew out of the very natural desire to even out access to different Google properties, which led to the question, “well what about non-Google sites?” OpenSocial is very much in its infancy. Will Facebook buy in to OpenSocial? (Unknown)
What will be the new applications with OpenSocial - what will you be able to do that up to now you have not been able to do? And think about this, what things will you not want this new technology to do? Just because you can link “everything” together doesn’t necessarily mean that you want to. So, what filters or controls should be in place to give the user some control over their online lives?
Discussion:
What are the privacy ramifications of OpenSocial? (This will likely be addressed in the People Search panel).
Will there be an Interface developed for OpenSocial? Currently it’s just at the API level.
What’s the benefit for other sites signing up? They’re comfortable with their user base, and they want to offer more features for them.
Next: Breakout groups, one of which will be a small group discussion of OpenSocial.
